I could not believe what I saw when a friend on FB posted a Flickr link to a site where some dude managed to get a series of hi-res photos of the scene before and after the incident.
The landslide occurred August 6th, 2010 when apparently a glacier failed and created a massive landslide, some 2kms wide, to come sliding down to the creek below. This formed a dam and blocked water from flowing naturally. Then officials noticed that the remaining runoff would be blocked and presented a flood risk to the communities located downstream.
1000 people were quickly evacuated and 4000 placed on alert.
I’ve seen what I thought was a big landslide when, as a child, we visited the site of the Hope/Princeton landslide whereas 3/4 of a mountain came barreling down like a flow of liquid that washed up the opposite side of the valley like a giant wave. I believe 11 people were killed in that incident. However this one dwarfs that slide by far.
I encourage you to see the photos for yourself of this incredible and disastrous event.
