These days you have to apply that little something extra to your work in order to become a standout in an otherwise overpopulated community. For that precise reason, each and every day of my life, I am constantly educating myself just like I’ve been doing for the better part of my life.
The following 7 Habits of Highly Effective Marketers was compiled by…you guessed it…yours truly. I’ve read enough material – watched enough documentaries and business/marketing related programming, to make the average Joe go blind. Not to mention the years of ‘real world’ experience I’ve got under my belt.
1.) What do you dream about? What do you think about while waiting at the doctor’s office? What goes through your mind and pulses through your veins each and every minute of everyday? If it’s not marketing then you need not apply.
Marketing masters live, breath and sleep marketing. And if you don’t have a passion for what you do…you wont succeed. I tell anyone thinking about getting in to the business: if you are getting in to marketing for the money then your in the wrong business. Do it cause you love it. Period!
2.) Scan the room.
The best in the biz will ALWAYS…and I repeat ALWAYS, walk in to any public place and evaluate the onsite marketing. Why? Well to secretly critique it is why. 😉
3.) Can’t keep a relationship? Oops…time to reconsider the marketing profession then.
Relationship marketing is defined as a form of marketing developed from direct response marketing campaigns which emphasizes customer retention and satisfaction, rather than a dominant focus on sales transactions.
Simply put…friendly folk get all the gloat. And the doe!
4.) Think like a Bugatti Veyron (fastest production car in the world).
Having the ability to think on the fly and snowball any conversation is always a plus. And I don’t mean the bullshitter in the room either. You must be able to lead a conversation from start to finish in order for anyone to take you seriously as a marketer. Marketers are normally the most talkative peeps in the room. Get a room full of them and look out!
5.) Sex sells but confidence pays the bills.
Who wants to hire a meek, shy, anti-social marketer? After all their jobs are to get the word out there and with a lid on it…that might prove difficult. Not to mention counter-productive.
Some of the greatest of all time have been labelled “arrogant”, “pompous” and even down right “used car saleman-like”.
The reality is that, a fine line exists between arrogance and confidence. Find the balance point and you’ve got yourself positioned well.
6.) The power of the list.
All successful marketing agencies or individuals will, without a doubt, tell you that their #1 most coveted asset – is their mailing list.
Habitually building your mailing list is crucial in todays digital realm. With the right target market (or not) and large enough numbers…a master marketer can work from anywhere on God’s green earth if they hold the power of an adequately sized marketable mailing list. If you haven’t started building one yet, you probably should.

7.) Think outside the box!
This is actually the #1 most important addiction to take onboard. Thinking so far outside of the proverbial box that it no longer fits in the tube (get it?), is always the trait of some of the greatest minds to ever put pen to paper. Theoretically speaking of course – as I write this on my 27″ iMac.
