Wow! Sensitive subject I’m sure but that’s what I’m all about…
Sometimes throughout our lives we align ourselves with what we think, are good people, when in reality thing’s are not as they appear on the surface. In business I try my best to research anyone I’m about to conduct business with or even meet over coffee. Why? Simple really. I believe that, although unfortunate, many people will label you in relation to whom you keep company. Whether it’s simply gossip or a 1 on 1 experience first hand, they will almost always associate YOU with the emotions they feel for the person you are company with. Like I said, it isn’t fair but more often than not…LIFE ISN’T FAIR.
There is an old saying that goes like this:
“A lie will circulate the globe a couple times while the truth is still tying it’s shoes.“
Sure sure sure…of course there are other determining factors to how effective this can be including the inevitable karma factor. I’m a subscriber to the belief that what goes around comes around, however this doesn’t help anyone in the reparation of the damage previously inflicted upon your character.
This scenario is very common in Costa Rica amongst foreigners moving or thinking of moving here. For some reason, myself included, we tend to attach ourselves to the first group of foreigners we come in contact with when we arrive. Even more so if they are from the same country as us. Now this is not necessarily a good thing, especially when we have no idea of who this person is or what they’ve possibly done in their past. To be quite honest here, I think that more times than not, the people who are so willing to help us, are usually the ones to watch out for most. I’m not saying dont trust anyone, I’m simply stating it would be a good idea to do your research and don’t be so trusting. I’ve met with people before who represent other parties who are considering business with me, yet what they do not understand is that the people they’ve trusted, have ulterior motives for which do not necessarily benefit nor represent, the best interest of the people who asked them to investigate. IE: the title of this article.
Again it’s unfortunate, but in the world in which we live, what can we expect when the ‘tube’ simply enforces this mentality of negativity and dismay by only airing doom and gloom with a dash of Hollywood gossip. I mean really here folks…we could be on the brink of WWIII and to be honest, I think we would prefer to hear or see more about a Kim Kardashian vacation porn video. Either that or what Paris Hilton or Britney Spears are wearing (or not) to the latest red carpet event. It’s pathetic.
In business, other people’s perception of you can have a serious affect on your character and even the likelihood of your success. For example if you were a recognized individual looking to break in to the market of mortgages and home equity loans, do you think it would be good for business for you to keep the company of someone on trial for various counts of mortgage fraud? One would think not.
This is why it is so important to select, not only your friends, but also casual acquaintances because like I previously mentioned…people will always judge you by the company you keep. This is ESPECIALLY the case here in Costa Rica so be aware!
